Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role 2026
SEX WORKER ROLE
Mary Larkin in The Ranch 2004
Character Is A Madam Who Runs A House Of Prostitution
And Is An Employer Of Prostitutes
With the end of “Sex and the City” and the start of “Desperate Housewives,” the mid-2000s saw an increase in female-centric comedy and drama shows. Unfortunately, most of the shows were cancelled after only one season. Showtime’s attempt was a drama series set in a Nevada brothel. “The Ranch,” depicted the lives and loves of women who work as sex workers in a legally supervised house of prostitution. It is overseen by state health inspectors (who administer weekly medical exams) and led by Mary Larkin (Amy Madigan), the establishment’s madam.
Written by Lisa Melamed and directed Susan Seidelman, this was a pilot for a potential series that was not picked up. Instead, it aired as a movie of the week before being released on DVD in an uncensored version that had a minute or two of nudity, including a lesbian scene.
