Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role 2024
SEX WORKER ROLE
Wins Oscar For Playing A Prostitute
Emma Stone portrays a female Frankenstein in the film adaptation of Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel Poor Things. An innovative and talented scientist revives Bella Baxter, a young woman, by transplanting a brain into Bella’s skull. From a nonverbal, clumsy child in an adult body, she undergoes a transformation to become the individual she is today. Early exposure to sexual behavior leads her to eventually engage in sexual activity herself. In the final stages of her journey to adulthood, Bella works as a prostitute in a brothel for a short period of time.
The Hollywood Reporter praised Stone’s performance, stating that she “gorges on it in a fearless performance that traces an expansive arc most actors could only dream about. She is stupendous as a reanimated woman reinventing herself and gets an absolute corker of a character to explore in Bella Baxter.”
