In the film adaptation of Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel Poor Things, which was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and released in 2023, Emma Stone played the role of Bella Baxter, a female Frankenstein. During the process of the transplanted brain inside Baxter’s skull taking in the world, she goes from being a nonverbal and clumsy toddler in an adult body to being the person she is today. She is exposed to sexual activity at an early age, and in the later stages of her voyage, Baxter works as a prostitute in a brothel for a period of time. There, she meets Toinette, another worker in the sex industry.
